Greenbank Takeaway, Brisbane impressed the socks off of me.
I rang them as I had heard great things from this little group of mine (Coeliac Disease Support Group Australia on FB) and was reassured there were separate areas and fryers and they fully understand. Went to order through Uber Eats a few hours later, and there wasn't a chips option in their GF section, so I ordered regular chips and added a note. Placed the order and then called them. They reassured me that as soon as something is selected as gluten free then they make everything gluten free. Which is just truly amazing. And then I got to enjoy this gigantic meal of fish and chips yumminess. They are fully coeliac aware, just don't have the CA Accreditation. 100% recommend. I was not left hungry, or disappointed.

Today, May 16, is International Coeliac Awareness Day.

Today I am asking supermarkets, especially Coles and Woolworths, to please do better.

Please increase your product range. The products are available, some have been around for years yet you don't stock them. A gluten version, however, is easily found on your shelves. I am asking for more than one door of frozen convenience products. Look I'm not asking for 6 (what a dream!), but hey 2 is a great start. And dedicated to gluten free, not mixed in with vegan and vegetarian foods. They also deserve their own freezer section. I went to find new products this week, and they just weren't there. The one door of gluten free was filled. Is it a space issue? I searched high and low for these products that I would have bought immediately, albeit stupidly expensive in comparison to gluten filled foods.

Your customers want to buy food. Please help out the 1 in 70 Aussies who have coeliac disease (not to mention non coeliac gluten sensitive people and others who follow the gluten free diet), and allow us to have a bit more variety.

We're hungry, man!

With ANZAC Day approaching both new and seasoned (no pun intended) coeliacs are looking to bake up some classic and important ANZAC Day bikkies.

Please be aware that some people and companies that you may follow on social media will say that oats are safe for coeliacs. While some coeliacs can tolerate oats, many can't. And those of us who can't, do have the same or similar reaction to that of being glutened. We get symptomatic (in various forms) and damage our bodies, making them more susceptible to other conditions which include bowel cancer. For this reason, oats cannot be labelled gluten free in Australia or New Zealand under the FSANZ laws (food labelling laws). To find out if you can tolerate oats, there is a medically supervised oat challenge that you can do through your gastroenterologist.

Please also remember that "GF Oats" that you may see in the shops and online, stands for "Gloriously Free", NOT Gluten Free.

This is a diplomatic post, but honeslty I am so very angry. If this was a peanut allergy rather than coeliac it would be treated so much differently and the "just try it and see how you feel" attitude would make the news. We need to be taken seriously. If you do see any posts across social media, please report them to Coeliac Australia, potentially the FSANZ, and comment if you feel like you want to.
